Google Logo Evolution: Decryption and History
Google’s first logo, called BackRub, stood out for its lack of aesthetics. Still prior to the name “Google”, this logo, created in 1996, was designed from Microsoft. We will not deny it, it represented the perfect illustration of ugliness, even if its designers, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, did not fail to find a relatively banal excuse: it was the product of a project of research conducted at Stanford University. Why Back Rub? This name was chosen because the search engine was to be used to find back links on the Internet.
In 1997, the founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin made the decision to launch the company in Google which is, in fact, a spelling error of the term “Googol” or “Gogol” in French. “Googol” represents a mathematical expression that equals 1 with 100 zeros at the end. It is akin to infinity. Looking at the number of users connected to this search engine every day, we quickly understand how this term makes sense.
1998 – 1999: The First Real Google Logo Designed with Gimp
After the release of the horror, Google is not yet about to want to recruit a graphic designer. This is how Sergey Brin takes matters into his own hands and gives the once basic logo a more computerized and refined side. It uses, for this purpose, GIMP, a Togo Email List free and open source alternative to Photoshop, in order to provide Google with a more appropriate image.
Mr Brin is betting on the Baskerville Bold font with a green G. However, the logo did not come a long way and was replaced within the same year. The change was observed at the level of the colors; the green “G” is now blue. The exclamation mark is also added, borrowed from Yahoo! logo.
In late August 1998, the same logo, at the Burning Man Festival, was replaced by an out of office message titled Google Doodle. This absence message comes in several hundred, all created by Dennis Hwang.
1999- 2010: More and More Intelligent Logos
Professor of design at Stanford University, Ruth Kedar readily accepts Brin and Page’s proposal to design some prototypes of the Google logo. To begin with, she uses the Adobe Garamond font to create her first initially black logo. It should be noted that this colorless logo is often used on home pages in memory of countries or people who are victims of a tragedy.
The design was used for the first time in April 2010, notably on the Poland home page, following the air disaster in which Polish President Lech Kaczynski was killed. The faded logo has also been used in China and Hong Kong, as a tribute to the victims of the Qinghai earthquake.
In addition, she does not hesitate to remove the exclamation point present in the Google logo. “Larry Page and Sergey Brin love this logo because the mark in the middle looks like a colorful Chinese finger trap,” she says.
For her next attempt, Ruth brings some more precision with the Catull font. Subsequently, the graphic designer began to bet on colors with the two “o” intertwined. On the next iteration, we are getting closer and closer to the Google logo as we know and appreciate it today. Next, Ruth Kedar brings out the letters on the page with thicker lines and a purple “l”, then a magnifying glass over one of the letters “o”.
2010 – 2013: Towards a Flatter Logo
Google changed its logo on May 6, 2010 by changing the “o”, previously yellow, to a more orange version. Shading and volume of letters have been removed. The Catull font is still used for the design of the new Google logo. In 2013, Google presented a logo in a slightly more “flat”, sober and refined aspect. We are faced with a dynamic logo, more vibrant than ever, with slightly modified colors.
In 2014, the Google logo is further updated. The second “g” is shifted one pixel to the right and the “l” is shifted one pixel down, but also to the right. The 2010 Google logo has been maintained and used on certain pages, namely the Google Doodles page for a period of time.
2015: When the dynamism is in full swing
In 2015, at the top of a design seminar in New York, Google designers met with the aim of giving the Google logo a new look. At the end of this sprint of more than a week, the new Google logo presents itself with several modifications. The company kept the brand’s own colors, respectively blue, red, orange, blue, green and red.
